Hypothalamohypophysial Portal System 1 What is it 2 How does
Hypothalamohypophysial Portal System.
1. What is it? 2. How does it affect the function of the Pituitary and other endocrine glands?
Solution
1. Hypothalamohypophysial portal system is a system consisting of a group of vessels that transfer blood and hormones from the hypothalamus to the target cells in anterior pituitary or adenohypophysis. The hormones transferred are releasing and inhibiting hormones.
2. Through this system hypothalamus regulate the activities of other endocrine glands.
The hypothalamus secretes releasing and inhibiting hormones which travel to anterior pituitary gland through this portal system. These hormones target specific cells which in response stimulate the secretion of their own hormones which can further target other endocrine glands or new target cells.
