Solve the following system of equations.

x + 2y = -5

3x + 7y = 1

Solution

x + 2y = -5 ----(1)

3x + 7y = 1 -----(2)

Solving by elimination:

multiply equa. (1) by 3:

3x +6y = -15

3x + 7y =1

------------- ( subtract)

6y -7y = -15 -1

y = 16

x = -5 -2y = -5 -2*16 = -5 -32 = -37

x = -37

Solution : ( x, y) = ( -37 , 16)
