Advice for college students?
Ok I know this isnt college confidential but I get replies here faster. So to begin with im a sophomore in civil engineering and still dont know much about what day to day tasks a civil engineer actually does. Which level of math do you use on the daily. Could you give an example of how a project goes and what your part was? and what you struggled with? How you approach the probelm mentally, like knowing which laws of physics of physics to apply? How did you know this was the right path for you as a college student? Whats the best way to understand physics conceptually?

Solution

Hi dear,

A student who is thinking for their future will always have the confusion about his carrer.

coming to your answer depending upon your designation in the company, work will be alloted. A site engineer regularly study the status of a project, completing the tasks, Assessing and managing the site, Engaging manpower (Supervisors, labours, helpers etc), Studying& understanding drawings (Auto CAD) and many depend on your designation.

If your a site engineer For estimation basic maths knowledge will required for example, calculating quantity of soil required to fill a trench for this you have to know areas and volume formulas.

if you to provide site investigation reports you should have knowledge regarding core subjects of civil and trignometry formulas

If you are a design engineer or structural engineer you should have knowledge of advanced maths techniques and some software tools (i.e MATLAB, Staad.pro etc)

consider a project like construction of a 10 storey building form the inital level:

A very first thing you should do is survey. you have to know the elevation of ground level, area of the plot so, that you can plan for built up area, second  Soil investigation(for sub structure design), Third Find construction materials near to your site so that u cane save considerable amount. fourth Send the Autocad drawings to the structural designer for structural drawings and to the architectural designer for architectural drawings and also to mechanical engineer for MEP drawings. As a site engineer u should have a knowledge to study all these drawings, and the execution work will be started. Now, its time for the Civil Engineers to play in their ground adding the flavor of management skills , thus balancing the work ,time and personal life.  A Civil engineer will strugle to reduce the non direct cost and A shift at site starts with the Safety Talk, where a site engineer alerts the workmen regarding the importance of safety in construction and insists to avoid unsafe acts.

A site engineer need a skill to manage a problem, if any problem accoured during execution he have to speak to the higher officials as early as possible. knowledge in physics is not mandatory.

If you are a design engineer you have to be good in newton laws, Force and moment& basic mechanics.

How did you know this was the right path for you as a college student?

without Civil Engineering, there\'d basically be no buildings, roads, bridges, dams. Good as a career ? Yes. Civil Engineering is a great major if you’re passionate about it.
