(a) what is the angle of incidence?

(b) the light refracted into the water is intecepted by the top flat surface of a block of glass with index of n=1.50. The light reflected from the glass is completely linearly polarized. What is the angle between the glass and the water surface?

(Please show solutions for both a and b)

Solution

thetai = thetap = tan-1(1.33)

= 53.06 deg

thetat = 90 - 53.06 = 36.94 deg

------------------------------------------------

From water to glass

thetai = thetap = tan-1(nt / ni)

thetai\' = thetap = tan-1(1.50 / 1.33) = 48.44 deg

The angle between glass and water surface

angle = thetai\' - thetat

=  48.44 - 36.94 = 11.5 deg
