The outside temperature can be estimated based on how fast crickets chirp. SIB At 104 chirps per minute, the temperature is 63 degree F At 176 chirps per minute, the temperature is 81 degree F Using this information you can make a formula that relates chirp rate to temperature. Assume the relationship is Unear, that is, the points form a straight line when plotted on a graph. What is the temperature if you hear 144 chirps per minute? What is the temperature if you hear 72 chirps per minute?
Solution
The two points to form alinear realtion are : ( 104 chrps/min, , 63degF) and ( 176 chrps/min, , 81degF)
Y = mx +c
m (slope) = ( 81 - 63)/( 176 -104) = 19/72 =0.264
y = 0.264x +c
81 = 176*0.264 +c ----> c = 34.53
y = 0.264x +34.53
x = 144 chirps/min: y = 0.264*144 +34.53 = 72.552 degF
x = 72 chirps/min : y = 0.264*72 +34.53 = 53.54 degF
