A bottle of fruit punch contains at least 473 ml. The machine that fills the bottles is set so that the mean volume is 477ml. The volumes in the bottles are normally distributed.

a) What percent of the bottles are underfilled if the standard deviation is 3 ml?

b) What percent of the bottles are underfilled if the standard deviation is 5 ml?

Solution

a)

X-bar = 473 ml

Mu = 477 ml

Standard Deviation = 3 ml

z = (473 - 477)/3 = -1.33

P-value = 0.0918 ,

Therefore 9.18% Answer

b)

X-bar = 473 ml

Mu = 477 ml

Standard Deviation = 5 ml

z = (473 - 477)/5 = -0.8

P-value = 0.2119

Therefore 21.19% Answer
