For a design project, we have to design a fuel pump that is placed outside of the fuel tank for a commercial application. The pump must be able to lift (suction) fuel, as well as pressurize the pump. One operationg condition we must consider is a dry start, where the fuel lines are not primed and the engine is starting. For example, the first time the engine is ever started. Can a piston pump handle this task? and what are some equations that could be used for checking?
Solution
Yes you can use piston pump. They are self priming and they handle high pressure. Important performance parameters for a piston pump are brake horse power, discharge capacity, delivery pressure, slip, mechanical efficiency etc. Better to use one pulsation damper also as the discharge will be pulsating. But the cost will bit high for a reciprocating pum.
