1. Why was it believed that RNA coded for proteins using an adapter molecule, rather than directly synthesizing proteins 2. How did researchers show that mRNA, not rRNA, was the message that encoded proteins 3. A gene is shown below (starting with ATG). What is the resulting mRNA? From which strand was this mRNA generated? 5\'-ATGCCATTCGAA-3\' 3\'-TACG (GTAAGCTT-5\' 4. What is meant by degenerate but not ambiguous? 5. Some tRNAs contain in which can base pair with A, C, and U. Why might this be advantageous with regards to OS the genetic code? b. When studying protein synthesis, researchers purified the samples so they were only studying completed polypeptides. Why was this essential to this study? What if they didn\'t perform this step?

Solution

1. The RNA molecule is not capable in itself to synthesize the protein molecule as the language for proteins is the genetic molecule rather than the nucleic acid. The adapter molecule for this purpose is tRNA which has amino acid at its one end and a matching anticodon at the other end of the mRNA, thus synthesizing the protein molecule.

2. The DNA is the molecule that is responsible for the inheritance of the genetic material. But this can be transferred by the DNA itself. It is done with the help of the RNA molecule which transcribes the information from the DNA to mRNA which subsequently gets translated to proteins. This was proved by the experiment of Griffith and later on by Hershey-Chase.

3. The resulting mRNA will be 5\'- AUGCCAUUCGAA-3\'. This mRNA will be generated from the template strand that is from 3\'-5\' strand.

4. The degenerate means that in any condition it is not possible that a genetic code will code for more than one amino acid. This is because it is said that the genetic code is degenerate, not ambiguous.

5. This is advantageous because it is capable of binding to more than one base and in this case tRNA will be capable of recognizing more than one codon otherwise, we require 60 different tRNA for different codons.

6. The purification of the sample is necessary as the purification removes the cell and tissue remain along with other materials. this enables the researchers to study the protein in concern easily. The purification separates the functional and nonfunctional part of the protein-making the study easier. If the step is not performed it will hinder the study of the protein. The results of the study will get altered and the duration of the study will be prolonged.
