In a given population of men and women, 25% of the men are married, and 30% of the women are married. What percent of the adult population is married? Assume the marriages are heterosexual and monogamous.
Solution
Let the number of males in the population be x
Let the number of females in the population be y
Total Population = (x+y)
Since 25% of men are married = 0.25x
Since 30% of women are married = 0.30y
Since marriages are heterosexual, hence we have
0.25x = 0.30y
x = 1.2y
Total Population = (x+y) = 1.2y + y = 2.2y
Number of People married = 0.25 * 1.2y + 0.30y = 0.60y
Percentage of adult population married = 0.60y/2.20y * 100 = 27.27%
