Solution

ERV or Expiratory Reserve Volume is the maximum volume expired following end of resting respiration. There is need to expire more air from the lungs as compared to resting conditions. As in gas exchange a larger volume of lungs is to be involved so as to raise the tidal volume with new air coming in with each breath. There is also requirement of expiring the raised amount of CO2 (and heat) formed during exercise.
