Your coworker Sara constantly takes personal calls on her cell phone even though she knows your employer has a rule banning personal use of the cell phone while in the workplace. Whenever she’s on her cell phone, she does not answer her regular work phone, thus adding more work for you and others. How do you think you should handle this situation?

You just got a phone call from a PC repair company that wants to interview you today. It is dress- down day at your workplace, so you’re wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Should you accept the offer to interview today or decline? Explain your answer.

You’re the lead PC technician for a company and have been put in charge of two inexperienced technicians who know nothing about ESD and mSDSs. What steps will you take to educate them to ensure they use anti-static devices and dispose of hazardous materials properly?

What is EmI and which components are particularly susceptible to it?

What is RFI? Write down three examples of RFI.

Solution

1) Sara.

To develop a teamwork we should be very polite in every moment, in order not to avoid problems (because they will always exist) but solving them in a very smart way. This situation is very uncomfortable and must be solved as soon as possible.

First of all I would try to talk to her and ask her please to help me with the job (making her understand that there is a lot ot job to do). If it doesn\'t work, I would tell her please to leave her phone and answer the regular work phone, in a very polite way but seriously. If it doesn\'t work I would talk with my coworkers in order to get a solution and talk to her. And, as a very last option, I would talk to my employer, telling him what is happening there.

2) If I was waiting for that phone call or I know that the PC repair company would give me better opportunities, a better salary, in brief, I would like to work with them, I would accept the offer to interview today.

However, I would do my best to find a better clothes before going to the interview. Even if it means running back to home or borrowing somebody\'s clothes because I know that the first impression is very important. With good clothes and a thick and firm voice, I could get hired.

3) First of all I would teach them how the components of a PC react to electrostatic, teaching them, with simple words what is ESD and mSDS. I would also show them what would be the consequences of damaging somebody\'s computer just by performing a bad procedure as well as the dangers of electrostatic discharge. Then, having created the awareness about the need of using anti-static devices and other security equipments, I would teach them how to use those equipments.

EMI is ElectroMagnetic Interference and it is a disturbance created by an extenal source and affects an electrical circuit by producing electromagnetic induction or electrostatic coupling. Almost all digital and analogic electrical circuit is susceptible to it, but normally its effect is heavier in Digital Circuits as: sequential circuits (microprocessors, computer,...) and Analogic Circuits as: radio and television.

RFI is Radio-Frequency Interference and is some kind of ElectroMagnetic interference but it happens (mostly) in Radio or Television transmissions, because they work with Radio-Frequency waves that are susceptible to interference. It could be defined as the disturbance created by an electromagnetic wave and affects an electrical circuit by producing electromagnetic induction. Three examples:

- When tuning a specific radio station and two different radio channels are heard

- When watching a TV channel and the image is affected by the image of another channel.

- When performing a phone call, another person starts talking as if he had been called.
