If I have 3 groups in a study, when would it be appropriate to use the oneway anova? the chi-square?

If the outcome measure is continuous ( atleast in interval or ratio scale of measurement) use ANOVA.

Example comparing average age of three groups.

If the outcome measure is frequency ( nominal scale of measurement) use Chi square.

Example comparing proportion of male or female in three groups.
