A leading consumer of frozen meat is the fast-food industry. One estimate claims that for every quarter-pound hamburger made from rain forest cattle, 55 square feet of rain forest must be cleared. What is your demand and society’s demand for frozen beef? Should it be reduced, or is this the price we must pay for a plentiful food supply? Is it reasonable to expect people to voluntarily reduce meat consumption, or should other incentives be developed?

Solution

Thanks for your question.
Well this a question which can have different view points. I will try to answer it as objectively as i can.
The fact is, different people have different needs. If somebody is craving to have meat of some sort, Would be appropriate to restrict its supply to him?? Just imagine you feel like eating chocolate and somebody tells you you cant have it because its difficult to make or something like that, etc. The point here is, is this need of having beef justified. Is it permissible and normal as per the community standards and beliefs. If it is, then it will have to be provided.
However, what can be done is that, is that the consumer can be educated about the benefits of consumption in moderation. Excess leads to problem. But most of the times, moderation eases the problem. The health benefits, of a diet of moderation can be publisized for promotion of better food habits.
As for as rain forests are concerned, it s decided by natuire whether it provides rain and vegetations so that cattle can be fed. If nature decides to have a famine, nobody can do anything about it. If nature decides to have a flood nothing much can be done about it. If nature decides to burn away a forest we cannot do much except try to douse the fire.
What we have to understand is, that nothing really, whether its food for cattle, number of cattle, health of cattle, sickness in cattle, good yield of meat is not entirely a assured gurantee. Nature decides what it provides, how much and in what quality. We can just follow nature and hope its kind to us.
