Hi. This is a Communication question.
My text book is Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions 11E
My question is from page 104 (chapter 4)
I need help adding on to these statements. The text book solutions are not completed and are being \"worked on\". But it\'s been almost 3 weeks. Thank You for your help!!!
1. Skill Builder Practice your skill at using unequivocal language by describing how each of the following sentences is likely to be misunderstood (or not understood at all). Then improve the clarity of each message by introducing your message with a high-level abstrac-tion and qualifying it with low-level abstractions. To invent meaningful low-level abstractions, you will have to imagine a specific scenario.
a. You did a heck of a job on that proposal.
b. There are just a few small problems to clear up.
c. I just need a little more time to finish the job.
d. Your job performance hasn’t been good this year.
Solution
a. You did a heck of a job on that proposal.
People may think the person did an awful job and that the boss is upset with the employee who did the proposal.
Improvement: George, you did a great job on that proposal, everyone liked it.
b. There are just a few small problems to clear up.
People don’t know the exact number of problems to clear up, “few” is not a number
Improvement: There are 3 problems that need to clear up before moving forward to the project.
c. I just need a little more time to finish the job.
Little more time is not specific, we can’t measure what is little time
Improvement: I need 2 hours to finish the job.
d. Your job performance hasn’t been good this year.
People can’t measure good or bad performance, you need data to compare
Improvement: The goal for this year was 90% of customer services satisfaction, you barely made 50% your performance is not on target.
