Calculate the G for uptake of K by a cell when the external

Calculate the G for uptake of K+ by a cell when the external concentration is 5mM and the internal concentration is 140mM.

Solution

G=RT ln(Xin/Xout)

where R=gas constant=2

T=temperature( body temperature of 37°C, so an absolute temperature of 37 + 273 = 310°K)

Xin=concentration inside cell in mM=140

Xout=concentration outside cell in mM=5

Coming to equation,

G = (2)(273+37) x ln (140/5)
= (2)(310) x ln (28)

=620 x 3.33

=2064.6 kcal/mol
