During hurricanes saltwater is blown into freshwater marshes

During hurricanes, saltwater is blown into freshwater marshes. Why do many of the freshwater plants and fish die? At the cellular level what would you expect to happen if you placed a piece of raw potato into tap water, distilled water, and a solution of 10 percentage sodium chloride?

Solution

2.1 When the salt water enters in to freshwater marshes during hurricanes, it distrubs the concentration of environement, it leads to increase the salt concentration in outerside environment, which further leads to exoosmosis. Due to loss of water, the fresh water plants and fishes die.

2.2 Potato in tap water: As the concentration is almost same it won\'t effect the cell.

Potato in distilled water: As the outer enviroment is hypotonic, it leads to endoosmosis

Potato in 10% sodium chloride: As the outer environment is hypertonic, it leads to exoosmosis.
