suppose that after 22 months, guppies from the transplanted population were returned to the source pool.what would mostly likely happen to those guppies?

Solution

1. The experiment was carried out by John Endler to understand the effect of predators on the colour pattern of guppies. He transplanted 200 guppies from pools that contains pike-cichlid fish to pools that contain killfish.

2. Predator, pike-cichlid fish is a intense predator which kills adult guppies with bright colours. As a result of which the adult males in pike-cichlid fish pool are drab in color as compared to the pool of killfish.

3. Predator, killfish is less active as compared to pike-cichlid fish and prefers juvenile guppies (Who are yet to express colours). As a result of which the adult males in killfish pool are bright in color as compared to the pool pike-cichlid fish. It is due to females more prefer bright color males.

4. When 200 guppies transferred from intense predator to less active predator, the results after 22 months (15 generations) shows that the number of color spot have been increased also colors are more bright. In 22 months there is observable evolutionary change. In this 22 months guppies have lost their initial trait of drab color to bright color.

5. If after 22 months guppies were retured to the source pool that is intense predator pike-cichlid fish, there are chances that guppies might return to their initial trait which was drab colors, as pike-cichlid fish will try to kill bright color guppies so in order to save their species the evolution will take place to reduce the number of colored spots and also there will be reduction in intesity of colors.
