LDL particles are referred to as bad cholesterol because they can transport their content of lipid molecules into artery walls, attract macrophages, and cause more incidences of atherosclerosis.

Whereas, HDL lipoproteins are considered healthy cholesterol since they can remove lipid molecules from macrophages in the wall of arteries. Hence decrease the incidences of atherosclerosis.
