Transgenic chickens Infection of chickens with the avian flu

Transgenic chickens. Infection of chickens with the avian flu is a threat to both poultry production and human health. A research team created transgenic chicken restraint to avian flu infection. If the transgene is inherited normally without lethal effects, then transgenic and wild-type crosses should provide, in the second generation (F2), 25% homozygote transgenic offspring, 50% heterozygote offspring, and 25% homozygote wild-type offspring. The researchers obtained 1002 chickens in F2, 25 of which were homozygote transgenic, 45 heterozygote, and 32 homozygote wild-type. Are these data consistent with a 1:2:1 ration in F2 as expected from a transgene inherited normally without lethal effects?

Solution

We can do chi square test for this

H0: Ratios are 1:2:1

Ha: Ratios are not as above

Two sided chisquare test.

Sample size = 102

Observed 25 45 32

Expected 25.5 51 25.5

chi squrae =0.3054

Df = 2

p value = 0.8584

As p value > alpha accept null hypothesis.

It is statitically evident that these data are consistent with a 1:2:1 ration in F2 as expected from a transgene inherited normally without lethal effects
