Please watch the video below (about the 1918 pandemic), read more information about influenza at the CDC, WHO and answer the following questions
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BN16ztNTNc
Questions:
1. What seems to be different, unusual, or unique about the 1918 pandemic when compared to typical influenza (actually most any infectious disease) epidemic/pandemic?( 3/4 page)
2. What possible explanations can you think of for why this pandemic was so deadly? (could be about the virus, host immune response, and/or social/cultural issues or conditions) (3/4 page)
Solution
1. The 1918 flu pandemic causedby H1N1 virus , killed 50 to 100 million people that accounted for approx 5% of population. It was the deadliest natural disaster in the human history that occured in year 1918.
Life expectancy of people dropped by 12 years and more.
The normal typical influenza normally affects, already old , juvenile, weakened patients but this pandemic flu killed millions of normal young healthy living people.
2 . Many questions though remain answered about the pandemic, as to why it affected rather young individuals who were immune to most of the viruses, whereas the ones with weaker immunities survived. May be because the virus was of aggressive nature as compared to the typical flu
