1RM or One-repetition maximum in weight training amounts to the maximum force that is generated in one maximal contraction, or it is a measure of individual\'s musclar strength. This measure is useful in determining maximum strength of an individual. It can be calculated both directly and indirectly. For direct calculation, maximal testing is done and for indirect calculation submaximal estimation is done. Submaximal estimation method is rather preferred over the maximal estimation because it is much safe and quick. It is also a less challenging method especially for non-trained individuals or exercisers.However, the accuracy of the two methods may vary; depending upon the training.
Direct method of 1RM measurement may be more time consuming and lead to muscle fatigue or deterioration, as the person is made to exercise against the maximal resistance. Indirect 1estimation is based on the maximum number of repetitions that are performed, and it predicts 1RM with a variable degree of accuracy.
