A moist silt soil cylinder is given, you are asked to experimentally determine if the soil is saturated or not. Please list the measurements and tests required for your determination. Also, provide the equations you will need for the calculation.

Solution

First find the weight of the moist sample. (w1)

Then place the sample in oven and then find the sample weight after 24 hrs. THis is dry weight. (w2)

Find the moisture content. w= (w1-w2)/w2

Find the specific gravity using pyconmeter method.

Find the dry unit weight of the sample by using formula (w2/volume)/unit weight of water.

Now use the formula to find void ratio. dry unit weight = S.G*unit weight of water/(1+e)

Now use the formula to find the saturation = S= w*G/e

If this comes 1, then it is fully saturated
