Make up your own example of a counting problem and indicate how to solve it using either the addition rule, multiplication rule, or some combination of these two rules.

Solution

Addition rule of counting Problem:

If there are n_1 ways to do task 1 and n_2 ways to do task 2.

If these taks can done at the same time then n_1+n_2 to do one of the two taks.

Example of counting problem using Addition rule:

   If there are 5 math majors and 15 science majors. Then there is a way to pick one math major or one science major as :

                 Total = 5+15=20

Multiplication rule of counding problem:

      If there are n_1 ways to tqask 1 and n_2 ways to taks 2. Then there are n_1n_2 ways to do both taks in sequence.

Example of counting problem using Multiplication rule:

         If there are 5 math majors and 15 science majors.

       Then there are a way to pick one math major and one science major as:

                       Total =5*15=75
