You need to design a pulley and belt system that can handle an 80 lb.-in. load at 300 rpm at the output shaft. The driver gear has 14 teeth and the driven gear (output) has 28 teeth and the belt series is “heavy”. Find the belt width that minimizes overdesign and appropriate shaft diameters (both shafts) to handle the load with a factor of safety of 2.
For the shaft: Sy=66,000 psi, Sut=78,000 psi
k values for endurance strength:
ka=0.78
Assume a diameter for the kb then double check that it is correct. If a wrong value of kb was assumed, mention it but you don’t need to repeat the calculation.
The belt tension (not including torque) is 5 lbs.
The attached sheet has an equation to find the angle of the belt created when two pulleys are different size.
