a diffraction pattern is produced by a rectangular aperture

a diffraction pattern is produced by a rectangular aperture with a width od 0.1 mm and a height of 0.2 mm, will the central maximum have greater height or width?

Solution

The width of the central maximum is inversely proportional to the slit width.

In the above case for the diffraction in the vertical direction the height of the slit is the quivalent width and the height of the central maximum is inversely proportional to it.

Since 0.2mm > 0.1 mm, hence the width of the central maximum is greater than the height.
