Calculate the fraction of atom sites that are vacant for sol

Calculate the fraction of atom sites that are vacant for solid copper at its melting point of 1084 degree C. Assume an activation energy of 0.9ev/atom. (b) Under what condition would dislocations start to slip in a metal? (c) When dislocations start to slip, what will happen to the metal macroscopically?

Solution

Dislocations are start to slip in a metal under influence of externally applied load during cold working

process like forging, cold Rolling process , etc

Due to slipage of disclocations there will be decrement in the developed stress till they reach grain boundary where it tangles (clashes) with another dislocation from another slip plane for which there is a sudden increase in strength i.e, strain harden region develops
