The spinal nerve that emerges between the atlas and axis vertebrae is: C0, C1 OR C2?
Solution
Ans :- A spiral nerve is a mixed nerve which carries motor , sensory and autonomicsignals between the spinal cord and the body. In human body there are 31 pairs of spinal nerves one on each side of the vertebral column .Each spinal nerve is formed by the combination of nerve fibres from its posterior and anterior roots. The spinal nerve emerges from the spinal column through an opening between the adjacent vertebrae. This is true for all spinal nerves except for the first pair (C1) which emerges between the occipetal bone and the atlas. The atlas (C1) and axis(C2) are the two top most vertebrae. The atlas forms the joint connecting the skull and spine. The axis C2 forms the pivot on which the atlas rotate. Therefore as explained above the spiral nerve that emerges between the atlas and the axis is C2 as atlas has no body and the body of atlas has fused with that of the axis.
