Advantages and disadvantages of using ASME elliptic method f

Advantages and disadvantages of using (ASME elliptic method) for designig the middle shaft in the double reduction gear train ?
Thanks in advance

Solution

ASME Elliptic method has the following advantages.

1) It has been seen that the ASME elliptic method fits the experimentally obtained stress data more accurately than other methods such as Soderberg, Gerber and Goodman theories. Hence ASME Elliptic gives more practically oriented results for shaft design.

2) It is always necessary to consider the possibility of static failure in the first load cycle. The Soderberg criteria inherently guards against yielding, as can be seen by noting that its failure curve is conservatively within the yield (Langer) line. The Gerber and modified Goodman criteria do not guard against yielding, requiring a separate check for yielding. The ASME Elliptic on the other hand takes yielding into account, but is not entirely conservative throughout its entire range. Hence ASME elliptic gives better results on this account as well.

ASME Elliptic method has the following disadvantages.

This method is more complex in practical application than Soderberg, Goodman methods.

ASME method uses a elliptic profile rather than a straight line method which is used by other methods and hence is higher order method. Higher order methods use more computational power than straight line methods.
