What is an action potential in your own words What is thresh
What is an action potential (in your own words)? What is \'threshold\' and how does the neuron get there? On the graph, what is happening in terms of ion channels (opening/dosing) AND ion movement (moving intracellular or extracellular) at points A-D. Label #1-3 and tell me what those terms mean in terms change in membrane potential. Label the y-axis (tickmarks) and x-axis (tickmarks + title of the axis/unit of measurement).
Solution
1: Action potential refers to the changes in the potential of the membrane of neuron. It includes depolarization and then repolarization of the membrane of the neuron followed by establishment of resting potential.
2: Threshold refers to the value of membrane potential which can trigger an action potential. A neuron reaches threshold with opening of gates of Na ion channels causing depolarization of the membrane of neuron. This in turn drives opening of activation gates of Na ion channels and the local potential is converted into threshold.
