A rectangualr swinning pool is 10 m wide x 12 m long. The concrete patio surrounding the pool is 12 m x 14 m and is pitched to drain towards the pool. When it starts to rain, the pool water level was 4\" below the rim of the pool. How many inches of rainfall had to occur before the pool overflows?
Solution
the pool water level is 4 \'\' beow the rim of the pool. so that means that
the rain will have to fill in the volume of the pool till a depth of = 4\'\' = .1016 m
volume of the empty pool = 10*12*.1016 = 12.192 m^3 = 744001.5 in^3
hence atleast 744001.5 cubic inches of rainfall will have to occur before the pool overflows
