Experimental design question...

Many college students are known to stay up late studying the night before a big exam. A researcher thought it would be interesting to see if sleep deprivation in college students could actually worsen test scores. The researcher chose 20 students that had a similar GPA to be a part of the experiment. Each student was given 2 hours of study time for a test that would be administered the next morning. Students where then subject to different amounts of sleep: 8hrs, 6hrs, and 4hrs. All students were then asked to complete the test at 8:00am the next morning. Independent variable: Dependent variable: Controlled Variables: Treatments: There are many different pain medicines available over the counter, but which one is the best? A researcher who suffers from migraines wanted to know what was the best over the counter pain medicine to take. The researcher set-up an experiment to test the effect of 3 pain medications (Advil, Tylenol, and Aleve) on how quickly they alleviate migraine symptoms. 100 participants were chosen to participate in the study. All participants suffered from migraines at least 1-2 times per month and had been diagnosed by a doctor as suffering from migraines. The dosage of each medication was kept the same. Participants were either given Advil, Tylenol, or Aleve at the onset of migraine symptoms. Each participant was timed based on time to alleviation of pain. Independent variable: Dependent variable: Controlled Variables: Treatments:

Solution

1.

Independent variable : Sleep deprivation hours

Dependent variable : Effect on test scores

Controlled variables :2 hrs of sleep , finish of test at 8 am the next morning.

Treatments: 8 hrs, 6hrs and 4 hrs of sleep.

2.

.Independent variable : Pain medications

Dependent variable :Alleviation of migrane symptoms

Controlled variables :at least 1-2 times suffering from migrane in a month , same dosage of medicine.

Treatments: Advil, Tylenol,Aleve

Explanation:Independent variable is the one that can be changed and which has an effect on the dependent variable.Dependent variable is an outcome of independent variable.Controlled variables are kept constant always.Treatments are combination of independent variables.
