Imagine your self at a college football game. You sit down in the grandstand to sip from a bubbling cup of tasty and refreshing Pepsi, and discover three yellowjackets perched on the brim of your cup. You move your cup. The yellowjackets follow. You swat them away. They come back. \"What, in Darwin\'s great name, is with these insects!,\" you snarl. Suddenly, recalling that you are a general biology I student, you rephrase the question, \"Why are these wondrous and plucky little creatures so attracted to my Pepsi?\" List 3 possible hypotheses why the yellowjackets are attracted to your soda. Design a series of experiments to test each of these six hypothesis. State your hypothesis and proposed experimental methodology clearly and concisely in the form of a table.
Solution
3 hypothesis:
1. I think it smells pleasant and they like it as nector smells pleasant.
2. Sugar Content in soda.
3. or may be they attracted towards the carbon dioxide in it.
4. or may be the soda content in it.
Experiments:
1. First you put different cups having sugar, soda, a mixture releasing CO2 and flowers with sweat and pleasant nector in them. Then observe on which cup they are at most.
2. Or you can just hold still the cup and observe yellow jackets carefully. If they are at the top of the cup this means they are attracted to CO2 or smell of the pepsi or if they are at the surface of liquid it may be the soda content or sugar content to which they are attracted.
3. Keep the pepsi open for a while till CO2 released completely and observe if yellow jackets are still coming. If they are, this means they are not attracted to CO2 or if they are not coming this means they are attracted to CO2.
| S. No. | Experiment | Result |
| 1 | put different cups having sugar, soda, a mixture releasing CO2 and flowers with sweat and pleasant nector in them. Then observe on which cup they are at most. | if they attracted towards any of them. That means our hypothesis is true. and we can say that they are attracted to that item. |
| 2 | If they are at the top of the cup this means they are attracted to CO2 or smell of the pepsi or if they are at the surface of liquid it may be the soda content or sugar content to which they are attracted. | If they are at the top this means the smell. Or if they are at the surface this the liquid content. |
| 3 | Keep the pepsi open for a while till CO2 released completely | If they dont come this means they are attracted to co2 else they are attracted to pleasant smell like nector. |
