Two motorists, one travelling 5 kph faster than the other, leave the same place at the same time and travel in opposite directions. Find the rate of each if they are 195 km apart after 3 hours.

Solution

let x = rate of motorist one
let x+5 = rate of motorist two
if they are traveling at the same time, their rate is
x+x+5 = 2x+5
then use rate*time=distance
(2x+5)*3 = 195
6x+15=195
6x=180
x=30
motorist one is traveling at 30 kmh and motorist two is traveling at 35 kmh
