Water to run a PeIton wheel is supplied by a penstock of length l and diameter D. The length of the pipeline I = 1600 m, pipe diameter D = 1.0 m and the nozzle diameter D_1 = 0.25 m. Assume that the only losses associated with the flow in the penstock are due to pipe friction and the friction factor 4f = 0.015 (h_t = 4f l/D V^2_1/2g). Determine the discharge of jet issuing from the nozzle.

Solution

To calculate the discharge we have to apply bernoullis here

I.e total head at water surface= total head at water exit

So q = 45m3/sec
