1) Why are commercial windows typically made reflective when residential ones typically are not?

2) What does the solar heat gain coefficient of a window mean?

Solution

1)

In the commercial places we are working with computers. Most reasons for applying window film to commercial windows is for heat and glare. If we are using less reflective windows, the glare is so intense that one is unable to see their computer monitors, and the heat is unbearable. So that’s why Commercial films are usually dark and reflective.

In the case of residential windows we need more ventilation. More ventilation is possible only when there is good transmission of light. Good transmission of light is only possible with less reflective windows. So that why Residential films are lighter and less reflective.

2)

It indicates the fraction of solar radiation coming through a window, both directly transmitted and absorbed and subsequently released inward. It is usually represented SHGC. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The lower SHGC represent less solar heat it transmits.
