A bus comes to a sudden stop to avoid hitting a dog. It accelerates uniformly at -4.8 m/s^2 as it slows from 8.3 m/s to 0 m/s.

Find the time interval of acceleration for the bus. Answer in units of s.

Solution

Time taken for an object to change its speed (or velocity) from initial speed of \'u\' to final speed of \'v\' is given by the formula:

Time = (Final speed - Initial speed)/Acceleration

or Time = (v - u)/a

where a = acceleration. As per the values given in the problem

v = 0 m/s, u = 8.3 m/s and a = -4.8 m/(s^2)

Therefore Time = (0 - 8.3)/(-4.8) = 1.7292 s (approximately)

Answer: Time interval of acceleration of the bus is 1.7292 s.
