The table on the right represents a linear function. What is f (-4)? If f(x) = -3, what is the value of x? What is the slope of the line? What is the y-intercept of the line? Write the equation for f(x) in slope-intercept form.

Solution

a) From Table : For x= -4 ; f(x) =11

b) f(x) = -3 , corresponding x from table: x= 3

c) Take any two points for finding slope:( x,f(x) )

slope = ( 9 -11)./( -3 - (-4) ) =-2/(-3 +4) = -2

d) Y intercept is point when x=0 ie. f(0):

we need to find the equation of line m = -2 and any point ( 1, 1)

y = -2x +c ---> 1 = -2 +c

c= 3

y intercept =3

e) Equation of line in slope intercept form : y = -2x +3
