Part A - Understanding the experiment A model helps scientists form testable hypotheses. What hypothesis was being tested with the Fus3 strain?

Mating factor is required to start the signal transduction pathway leading to shmoo formation.

Fus3 is required for the signal transduction pathway leading to shmoo formation.

Fus3 is required for formin phosphorylation.

Fus3 causes shmoo formation in mating yeast.

Solution

Fus3 is a signalling protein belonging to MAPK family which is involved in mating decision of yeast. The dissociation of Fus3 from the scaffold portein Ste5 results in the mating decision in yeast which has a switch like model. Fus3 dephophorylates sites on Ste5 by competing with Pte1 due to which Fus3 dissociates from Ste5 and moves into nucleus.

Fus3 being involved in signal transduction during mating decision in yeast results in the cell division of the yeast. Loss of Fus3 leads to cell cycle defects in the mating yeast. Fus3 also leads to formation of shmoo during the mating decisons. So ?Fus3 strain will test the role of this gene during mating decision in yeast.
