The beam below is supported by cable CD. There is a force of 45 lbs at E and 120 lbs at B. Determine the transverse shear stress at point J located in the middle of the member, halfway between A and E. The member has a round cross section with a diameter of 3 inches.

Solution

from momentum equilibirium:

45x9+120x18=Fx4.5

F is fore at Point J. distane from point A is 4.5 in.

after solving equation

F= 570lbs

transverse shear stress= Force/ Area

Area of beam= 22/7x(3/2)2

=7.07

Put value of area in equation:

Tr Shear Stress=570/7.07

=80.622
