If the cells in a plant are all connected to one another by plasmodesmata, why doesn’t the cytoplasm from the entire plant leak out onto the ground when you cut the stem?
Solution
Answer:
Plants are multicellular, each cell is connected to another cell by plasmodesmata. Plasmodesmate is present in the plasma membrane, it regulate the movement of the small molecules such as the salts, sugars and aminoacids. The opening and closing of the palsmodesmata allows the movement of the small molecules. The plasmodesmata allows the movement of the solute molecules through the phloem, especially the sieve tube elements. When stem is cut, the sieve plates in the phloem are blocked by macroproteins in the pholem and prevent the loss the fluid or sap.
