Heat stroke is a condition that can result from (among other things) prolong exercise in the heat. If the body temperature raises to a high enough level, it damages the temperature- control centers in the hypothalamus. Once damaged, these control centers will not initiate the appropriate responses for heat loss by the body, and body temperature will increase even further. Body temperature will continue to increase until death ensues or emergency treatment is provided. Which type of feedback mechanism is at work in the development of heart stroke? Explain how heat stroke represents a failure of homeostasis. Which part of the normal feedback system is damaged in example?

Solution

3: The negative feedback leads to reverse the effect while the positive feedback mechanisms operate by enhancing the effect. Since heat stroke includes cessation of working of temperature control centers in hypothalamus to increase the body temperature even more, it is positive feedback system. The damaged centers prevent the initiation of generation of response to loose the heat by the body. For ex: sweating is stopped. This causes further increase in temperature and finally leading to the heat stroke.
4: In development of heat stroke, the negative feedback mechanism, which otherwise serves to maintain the constant body temperature by initiating the process such as sweating, are stopped. So, the negative feedback loop is disturbed in development of heat stroke which otherwise keeps the body temperature low.
