Another important measurement that is taken in a science lab

Another important measurement that is taken in a science laboratory is temperature. There are two different scales for taking temperature. Centigrade/Celsius which is based on the freezing (0degree) and boiling (100degree) points of water, and Fahrenheit which is most often used in the United States. Occasionally one needs to convert from one to the other. Below you will find the formulas to do so. degree C = (degree F - 32) times 5/9 degree F (degree C) times 9/5 + 32 It is important to take care of the parenthesis first, otherwise the formulas will not work. Do the following exercise to check your ability to use a thermometer and the formulas. What is the temperature of the following in degrees Celsius. then convert it to Fahrenheit: ice water tap water salted ice water room temperature body temperature degree C degree F (hold the thermometer your under arm for two minute)

Solution

a. ice water --------- 0 degree celsius ; 32 degree Fahrenheit

Explanation- degree Fahrenheit= degree celsius x 9/5 + 32

b. tap water -------- 7 degree celsius; 44.6 degree Fahrenheit

Explanation- degree Fahrenheit= degree celsius x 9/5 + 32

= 7 x 9/5 + 32= 44.6 degree Fahrenheit

c. salted ice water ------- -21.1 degree celsius ; -5.98 degree Fahrenheit

Explanation- degree Fahrenheit= degree celsius x 9/5 + 32

= -21.1 x9/5 +32 = -5.98 degree Fahrenheit

d. room temperature -------- 23 degree celsius ; 73.4 degree Fahrenheit

Explanation- degree Fahrenheit= degree celsius  x 9/5 + 32

= 23  x 9/5 + 32 = 73.4 degree Fahrenheit

e. body temperature -------- 37 degree celsius; 98.6 degree Fahrenheit

Explanation- degree Fahrenheit= degree celsius  x 9/5 + 32

= 37x 9/5 + 32= 98.6 degree Fahrenheit
