Sickle-cell disease occurs due to the replacement of the amino acid glutamic acid (glu) by valine (val) in one particlar postion in the B-chain of hemoglobin. This occurs due to a mutation in the gene that codes for the hemoglobin B-chain. What nucleotide or nucleotides must be changed in mRNA to get valine instead of glutamic acid?

Answer : Sickle cell anemia is an example of disease caused due to missense mutation which brings about the alteration in the codon so as to produce an altered amino acid in the protein. In humans a single nucleotide change in codon six in the beta hemoglobin chain (GAG – Glutamate) to (GUG – valine) in the mRNA.
