Sexual violence in jails and prisons has been discussed in the textbook in several chapters. This unit’s required reading also discusses it. Do you think that the new Prison Rape Elimination Act will make an impact in curbing this problem? Does the new law reach far enough, or does it need to be tougher on inmates that engage in this type of behavior?
Solution
The new Prison Rape Elimination Act was established in the year 2003. It was introduced to reduce the number of assault cases in the prison. It enables zero-tolerance policy in the prison which fights against criminal act of violence. The study conducted in the U.S. shows that the rate of rape prisoners have been 4.5% of the American prisoners. Due to the ammendment of this law, this rate had declined. There must be harder punishment which would decrease the sexual assault case and would help to maintain discipline in prison. It would create a fear among the prisoners to stop getting into such act which shows disrespect to woman. The new law would show an immediate effect once implemented on such cases of Rape in Prison when strict actions would be taken against those who get involve in such a criminal act.
