EX 1 6. Find the equation of a line in slope-intercept form that goes through (-4, 2) and is perpendicular to 2x + 4y = 8.

Solution

2x + 4y = 8
4y = -2x+8
y = -(2/4)x + (8/4)
y = -0.5*x + 2
slope of this line is   - 0.5

slope of perpendicular line = -1/(-0.5)
                                                         = 2

This line passes through (-4,2)

Equation of line:
(y-y1) = slope (x-x1)
(y-2) = 2*(x+4)
y-2 = 2x + 8
y = 2x+10
y-2x = 10

Answer:
y-2x = 10
