q.n.1) What is engineering ethics.Write an ethic on Mechanical Engineering Technology(Course:MET-100)
q.n.2)Write on the 19th century and growing concern based on engineering ethics.
q.n.3) Write turning of the 20th century and turning point based on engineering ethics.
Solution
Qn 1)
Engineering Ethics: It is the application of moral ethics, systems, values and principles which have been applied and followed in the field of engineering practice by engineers to the society and their profession.
Ethic on Mechanical Engineering Technology: As an ethic in Mechanical Engineering Technology, we as Mechanical Engineers must be confident about iur knowledge and skills to produce, control and manage systems and mechanisms that operate safely, carefully, reliably with the least negative impacts on our society, people and profession. Therefore, as engineers, we must have trust and awareness towards quality of our work, its social, economic and environmental benefits. Besides, we should also make aware of limitations of the systems and product we design for the welfare of the civilization. This is the fundamental responsibility of mechanical engineering ethics towards our society.
Qn 2)
In the 19th century, most of the engineers found to be either independent professional practitioner or as a technical employee of any established or growing concern and a considerable situation of competition and tight tension was observed between these two sides of engineering practice. As a consequence of this competition, growing professionalism, in the United States, some four engineering societies had been found namely ASCE (1851), AIEE (1884), ASME (1880) and AIME (1871). Among thsese, ASCE & AIEE were more closely identified with the engineers as learned professional, on the other side, ASME to an extent and AIME almost entirely establised with the view that engineer is a technical employee. In this time, ethic was viewed and considered as personal rather than professional concern.
Qn 3)
In the begining of 20th century, a series of significant failures had been established including some drastical bridge failures like Tay bridge disaster (1879), Quebec bridge collapse (1907) etc. which had a profound effect on engineers, their technical excellence, degree of expertise in construction practice as well as engineering ethical standards. Professional practice required some formal ceredentials as a requirement to practice which involves meetings some combination of educational, experience and testing requirements. In 1950, the Association of German Engineers establised an oath for all its members titled \'The Confession of the Engineers\' which indicated the role of engineers. The US model has been developed some rules to be licensed, while engineers working in industry, education, and sometimes government need not be licensed.
