The Precautionary Principle has four central components: taking preventive action in the face of uncertainty; shifting the burden of proof to the proponents of an activity; exploring a wide range of alternatives to possibly harmful actions; and increasing public participation in decision making. How and where can we see this principle in use to address the issues of environmental problems?
Solution
Answer : The precautionary principle encourages policies that protect human health and the environment in the face of uncertain risks. The precautionary principle has four components and each component of the precautionary principle is elaborated with the case study on environmental issues like global warming, Use of pestiscides, climate change, ecosystem degradation, and resource depletion .
1. Taking preventive action in the face of uncertainty: The scientists have shown to the world that global warming has caused due to many factors and explained about the raise in the temperature. The global warming has caused due to the green house gases, the release of harmfull gases into the environment has caused raise in the temperature. Even though this has intimated to the world. Most people agree to this but unable to stop constructing the green houses and to treat the industrail gases to control the environmental disaater of global warming.
2. shifting the burden of proof to the proponents of an activity; even though people knows the potentials of risk caused by the global warming. when the intial raise in the global warming has started taking place the government has taken steps to ban the construction of green houses.
3. exploring a wide range of alternatives to possibly harmful actions; The government has to take steps in educating the people about the hazards caused by the global warming and employed some of the leading scientists of the world to combat or come out with alternate solutions to protect the global warming with new technologies to prevent the global warming.
4. increasing public participation in decision making: Allowing the public to participate in the actions to be taken to correct the damage caused due to global warming before making any decisions will help the government to take the inputs from the public to avoid the global warming
