pump power

Water is to be pumped to the atmosphere from a large tank through a horizontal pipe of D = 10 cm with an exit velocity of 8 m/s. The outlet of the pipe is 2 m above the water surface and the depth of the suction pipe is 10 m, as shown. Calculate the pump power required, in kW, if the loss (in terms of energy/mass) is estimated as: 1,000 Q^2 where Q is volumetric flow rate in m^3/s. Note that the constant (1,000) is dimensional.

Solution

The flow of volume is given by

Q=VA =8 ( 10/100)^2(1/4)Pi= 0.062832 m^3/s

the lost is

lost= 1000^2*0.06832= 3.94784 W

so the pump power rrequired is given by

theorical power - power lost

=density*gravity*flow*higth - power lost

=1000*9.81*0.062832*12 -3.94784 = 7392.64 W

=7.392 kW

so good luck :)
