a researcher wishes to compare binge drinking in college students age 20 to 24, to non-students of the same age group. A sample of 45 college students found 19 had binge drank over the past 30 days, and a sample of 39 non-college students, age 20 to 24, found that 18 of the binge drank over the past 30 days. At the .05 significance level, does there appear to be any significant difference between students and non-students?

Solution

Let p1 be the proportion for first group of students and p2 non students.

p1 = 19/45 = 0.422

p2 = 18/39 = 0.462

p1-p2 = -0.040

t statistic =

t score = -0.362

p value = 0.7188

As p value > 0.05, accept that there is no signficant difference between students and non students.
