Electric power is to be generated by installing a hydraulic turbine–generator at a site 136 m below the free surface of a large water reservoir that can supply water at a rate of 2400 kg/s steadily. Determine the power generation potential. Assume that the elevation of the reservoir remains constant and the mechanical energy of water at the turbine exit is negligible. (Round the final answer to two decimal places.)

Solution

Solution :

The hyraulic turbine power generation capacity is given by the formula

P = rho*g*h*q

rho= 1000 kg/m3

g= 9.81 m/s2

h=136 m

q= 2400 kg/s = 2.4 m3/s

Hence P = 9.81*2.4*1000*136 = 3.21 MW
